Along with the soldiers, Roman culture and lifestyle arrived in the Taunus around 2,000 years ago. Even here, on the frontier of the Roman Empire, there was no need to do without culinary luxuries. Wine from the South, oysters from the North Sea, Spanish fish sauce, North African dates - all this and much more was part of the Roman soldier's diet.
At the Saalburg, the original Limes fort and archaeological museum rebuilt by Kaiser Wilhelm II, visitors can not only learn interesting facts about our history, but also experience the culture and daily life of the Romans.

Would you like to enjoy a bit of Roman hospitality today? Then why not take a short break during your tour of the fort. Our Museum Café Taberna extends you a cordial invitation.

Here, you can experience the ambiance of a Roman restaurant. Fittings reconstructed according to ancient models, such as the stove, pantry, shelving and doors, give the impression of a Roman dining room. The furniture evokes the Roman period and the walls are decorated with scenes from Roman daily life. Weather permitting, you can enjoy your meal on the terrace in the park.

Want to dine like a Roman?
On our menu, you'll find dishes from the Roman kitchen. How about a sip of "Mulsum," the honey-flavoured wine, or a spicy bite of "Moretum," the Romans' herb cheese? Or why not try one of our dishes cooked according to traditional recipes: Roman Stew, Lucanian Sausages - either air-dried or grilled. Pork Fricassee with Apricots is very popular, as is our Parthian Chicken. Ask about our daily specials. We're sure you'll enjoy the taste of Rome.

Of course, we also offer all sorts of treats from the modern kitchen: fresh salads, snacks, hot dishes and special children's menus. Homemade cakes and specialty coffees round out our menu. In addition, the Keth Bakery delivers freshly made "Roman Bread," prepared daily according to a traditional recipe. Many of our specialities are also available to take away.

You'll see, in our café you'll always find just the right thing to satisfy your appetite.
We extend a warm welcome to our guests in the Taberna.
