State Secretary Christoph Degen visits the Roman fort Kleiner Feldberg

To mark the 20th anniversary of the inscription of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 15, 2025, the State Palaces and Gardens of Hesse (SG), together with the Saalburg Roman Fort, hosted a reception at the Kleiner Feldberg Roman Fort in the Taunus Mountains. In the presence of State Secretary Christoph Degen from the Hessian Ministry of Science and Research, Arts and Culture, District Administrator Ulrich Krebs, and representatives of hessenARCHÄOLOGY and the German Limes Commission, the significance of the World Heritage site was recognized and a look into the future was explored.

In addition to the significance of the Limes as an international cultural heritage site, the successful collaboration between the SG and the Saalburg was also in focus. Volker Gilbert, Deputy Director of the SG, emphasized: "Together with the Saalburg team, our goal is to bring Hesse's Roman past to life – not just in museums, but directly in the landscape. The Kleiner Feldberg and Kapersburg forts are very special places that our visitors can now experience even more vividly with new on-site audio tours."

With two new, free audio tours in the SG's Cultural Treasures app, you can now explore both forts individually using your own smartphone. Both forts are freely accessible and can be reached via hiking trails.
