How does that work? Experimental Archaeology Theme Day
It is always fascinating to consider the technical and organizational achievements of people in earlier eras. Even today, we often wonder how different things were made and how they functioned, or what certain artifacts were used for. Reconstructing objects, tools, and buildings, as well as conducting targeted practical experiments, provides important clues and often concrete answers to these questions. Experimental archaeology utilizes precisely these methods to illustrate these concepts and is therefore an essential approach to understanding antiquity. Since its reconstruction beginning in the late 19th century, the Saalburg has been a central research institution for experimental archaeology.
This themed day offers a wealth of insights into crafts and techniques that are no longer widely known. It covers fundamental skills such as fire-making, ironworking, bronze casting, woodworking, metalworking, and much more. Replicated objects can be examined, many can be touched, and all interested participants can try their hand at certain activities.
