Obituary Prof. Dr. Dietwulf Baatz
On November 23, 2021, Prof. Dr. Dietwulf Baatz died at the age of 93 after a short illness.
Dietwulf Baatz was director of the Saalburg Roman fort from 1967 to 1993. Under his aegis, the Saalburg developed into a modern museum with improved infrastructure and new exhibition areas, which attracted a record number of visitors. At the same time, as a tireless and versatile archaeologist, he was able to establish a research facility in the museum that was one of the leading international institutes. He focussed on the development and expansion of the Limes and on the history of ancient technology, which he understood like no other thanks to his first degree in physics and mathematics. His always strictly methodical approach characterised his teaching activities at the universities of Marburg and Frankfurt am Main.
Even after his retirement, he continued to be present in the field and made many important contributions to questions of Limes research, the functioning of ancient guns and the history of technology.
The staff of Saalburg Roman Fort and hessenARCHÄOLOGIE mourn the loss of an outstanding researcher and dedicated museum director.
