Public tours of the Saalburg

This weekend we are celebrating with international Roman groups, riders with their horses, colleagues from Limes research and all visitors, because together with the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, the Saalburg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

The Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes (ORL) is part of a larger whole, as the borders of the Roman Empire from the Antonine Wall in Scotland to the Iža bridgehead fort in Slovakia and also the Dacian Limes in Romania have now been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

This weekend we are celebrating with international Roman groups, riders with their horses, colleagues from Limes research and all visitors, because together with the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, the Saalburg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

With a total length of 550 km, the Roman Limes is the largest archaeological monument in Europe, of which around 150 km run through Hesse.

Public tours of the Saalburg

During a joint tour of the museum grounds, the museum education team introduces teachers from all types of schools to the most important areas...

Apollo, god of archers, and Diana, goddess of the hunt, are the patron saints of our adventurous weekends for parents and children, featuring bow making, games, campfires, and more. Unfortunately, this course is already fully booked.

Accompany the messenger rider and his horse at various stations through the fort as he reports on his everyday life in the Roman army. The Roman school provides insights into the everyday life of the children and invites you to join in.

It is probably no exaggeration to consider wood as the most important raw material in world history.

It is probably no exaggeration to consider wood as the most important raw material in world history.

Roman woodcraft with its highly developed craft tradition is evident in the preserved wooden finds as well as the diverse known tools.

Ever since humans have existed, forests and wood have been used. This was no different in Roman times in Germania than it was in the late Middle Ages and today.
